Which road are you defending?

The early Advent movement was born from Bible study, prophecy, sacrifice, the judgment-hour message, the Midnight Cry, and a call to come out of Babylon. The corporate milestone of 1904 came later; the record shows that compromise and worldly influence had been pressing in since 1844.

The sequence that must be examined

Alliance first. Solomon's fall came through alliances that turned his heart. In Adventist history, the warning concerns the same direction: a movement raised to identify Babylon progressively entered worldly alliances, reorganized under civil law, and later described its historic anti-popery witness as belonging to the “historical trash heap.”

The apostasy did not begin in 1904. The April 15, 1904 General Conference Corporation was a visible milestone in an older departure. The wise-virgin road returns to the platform of truth recovered between 1840 and 1850: the prophetic waymarks, sanctuary, commandments of God, faith of Jesus, Three Angels' Messages, Protestant identification of Rome, and separation from Babylon.

The co-founder of the movement stated plainly why the 1840–1850 pioneers rejected the Trinity of gods — and warned the saints never to go back to the marks the virgin band got rid of.

James White — The Reformers Stopped Reforming

“The ‘mystery of iniquity’ began to work in the church in Paul’s day. It finally crowded out the simplicity of the gospel, and corrupted the doctrine of Christ, and the church went into the wilderness. Martin Luther, and other reformers, arose in the strength of God, and with the Word and Spirit, made mighty strides in the Reformation. The greatest fault we can find in the Reformation is, the Reformers stopped reforming. Had they gone on, and onward, till they had left the last vestige of Papacy behind, such as natural immortality, sprinkling, the trinity, and Sunday-keeping, the church would now be free from her unscriptural errors.”

Today — Fundamental Belief No. 2, “The Trinity”

“There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three coeternal Persons.”

Official adoption: Fundamental Belief No. 2 was adopted at the 1980 General Conference Session, replacing the pioneer-era confession with the statement that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are “one God ... a unity of three coeternal Persons.” Compare the official current wording at adventist.org.

1872 — A Declaration of the Fundamental Principles

“1. That there is one God, a personal, spiritual being, the creator of all things… everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit.”

“2. That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Eternal Father, the one by whom God created all things, and by whom they do consist…”

No Trinity article exists anywhere in the 1872 declaration — the document the pioneers called “the principal features of our faith.” This is the original roots document to read beside the 1980 adoption.

Why the 1840–1850 pioneers rejected the Trinity of gods: James White wrote that the Trinity “does away the personality of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ” (Review and Herald, 1855), and Joseph Bates concluded it was impossible “to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, was also the Almighty God” (Autobiography, 1868, p. 205). The modern Fundamental Belief No. 2 confesses “three coeternal Persons”; the 1872 platform confesses one God, the Father, and one Lord Jesus Christ, His Son. Read them side by side and the doctrinal transition speaks for itself.

The additional mention

Return to the platform. Come out of the corruption.

The Loud Cry repeats the Second Angel's message with an added warning about corruptions that entered the churches after 1844. That warning calls for honest examination, not loyalty to a later structure simply because it is respectable, cultured, or familiar.
