The Stoicsand theEpicureansencounteredhim ; but they,and allotherswho came incontactwith him, soon saw thathe had a storeof knowledgeeven greaterthan theirown. His intellectual powercommanded therespectand attentionofthe more intellectualand learned; whilehisearnest, logicalreasoning, and hispower of oratory,held thepromiscuousaudience. Thus theapostlestood undaunted, meeting his opposerson theirown ground,matchinglogicwithlogic,and philosophy withphilosophy. Theyremindedhim ofSocrates,a greatphilosopher,who wascondemnedtodeathbecausehewas a setterforthofstrangegods. Paulwas counseled nottoendangerhislifeinthesame way. But the apostle'sdiscourserivetedtheattentionofthepeople; and hisunaffectedwisdom commanded their respectand admiration. He was not silencedby thescienceorironyofthephilosophers;and,after exchangingmany wordswithhim ,and satisfying themselvesthathe was determinedto accomplish hiserrandamong them, and tellhisstoryat all hazards,theydecidedtogivehimafairopportunity to speak to the people. They accordinglyconductedhim toMars'Hill. This was the most sacredspot in allAthens, and its recollectionsand associationswere such as to causeit to be regardedwith superstitious awe and reverence, that with some amounted to dread.
