At a littledistancewas a temple of the gods; and the sanctuaries,statues,and altarsof thecitywere in full view . Here ,away from the noiseand bustleof crowded thoroughfares,and the tumultof promiscuousdiscussion, theapostlecouldbe heardwithoutinterruption; forthefrivolous,thoughtlessclassof societydid not careto followhim to thisplaceof highestreverence. Around him here were gatheredpoets,artists,and philosophers, thescholars and sages of Athens, who thus addressedhim : " May we know what thisnew doctrine, whereof thou speakest,is? forthou bringestcertainstrange thingstoourears; we wouldknow,therefore,what thesethingsmean." The apostlestoodcalm and self-possessedin thathour of solemnresponsibility, relyingupon thedivineassurance,designedforsuch a timeas this,"Itshallbe givenyou what ye oughttosay." His heart was burdened with his important message,and thewordsthatfellfromhislipscon-vinced his hearers that he was no idle babbler : " Ye men of Athens,I perceivethatin allthings ye aretoosuperstitious. For as I passedby and beheldyourdevotions,I foundan altarwiththis inscription,Το THE UNKNOWN GOD . Whom thereforeye ignorantlyworship, him declareI unto you. With all theirintelligenceand general knowledge,theywereignorantofthetrueGod. The inscriptionupon theiraltarshowedthestrong cravingsofthesoulforgreaterlight. Theywere reachingoutforInfinity. ود
