The religionof theAthenians, ofwhichtheymade greatboast,was of no value,foritwas destituteof the knowledgeof the trueGod . It consisted,ingreatpart,ofartworship,and a roundof dissipatingamusement and festivities. Itwanted thevirtueoftruegoodness. Genuinereligiongives men thevictoryoverthemselves; buta religionof mere intellectand tasteiswantinginthequalities essentialto raiseitspossessorabove the evilsofhis nature, and to connect him with God . On the verystonesofthealtarinAthens thisgreatwant was expressedby the inscription, "TO THE UNKNOWN GOD ." Yes; thoughboastingoftheirwisdom ,wealth,and skillin artand science,thelearned Athenianscould but acknowledgethatthe great Ruler of the universe was unknown to them . The greatmen of thecityseemedhungeringfor subjectsofdiscussion,inwhichtheywouldhaveopportunityto displaytheirwisdom and oratory. WhilewaitingforSilasandTimothytomeethim, Paulwas notidle. " He disputedinthesynagogue withtheJews,and withthedevoutpersons,and in themarket dailywith them thatmet withhim." The greatmen ofAthens were not longinfinding out thissingularteacher,who presentedto the peopledoctrinessonew and strange. Some who pridedthemselvesupon theextentof theirintellectualculture entered into conversation with him . This soon drew a crowd of listeners aboutthem.
