The minds of the Bereans were not narrowed by prejudice, and they were willingto investigateand receivethetruthspreachedby theapostles. If thepeopleof our timewould followthe example of the nobleBereans, in searchingthe Scripturesdaily,and in comparingthe messages brought to them with what isthererecorded, therewould be thousandsloyalto God's law where thereisoneto-day. But many who professto loveGod have no desireto change from errorto truth, and they clingto the pleasing fablesof the lastdays. Error blindsthe mind and leadsfrom God ; but truthgiveslightto the mind ,and lifeto the soul. The unbelievingJews of Thessalonica, filled withjealousyand hatredoftheapostles,and not contentwith having driven them from their laborsamong theThessalonians,followedthem to Berea,and againstirredup theexcitablepassions of the lower class to do them violence. The teachersof the truth were again drivenfrom their field of labor . Persecution followed them from citytocity. Thishastyretreatfrom Berea deprivedPaulof theopportunityhe had anticipatedof again visitingthe brethrenat Thessalonica . Although theopposersofthedoctrineof Christ couldnot hinder itsactualadvancement, they stillsucceededin making thework of the apostlesexceedinglyhard. God, in hisprovidence, permittedSatan to hinderPaul from returning to the Thessalonians. Yet the faithfulapostle steadilypressedon through opposition, conflict, and persecution,tocarryout thepurposeof God
