PAUL AT BEREA AND ATHENS . 89 as revealed to him in the vision at Jerusalem : " I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles ." From Berea Paul went to Athens . He was accompaniedon hisjourneyby some oftheBereanswho had been newly broughtintothefaith, and who were desirousoflearningmore from him oftheway oflife. When the apostlearrivedat Athens,he sentthesemen back with a message toSilasand Timothytojoinhim immediatelyin that city. Timothy had come to Berea previouslyto Paul'sdeparture, and with Silashad remained to carryon the work so wellbegun there, and to instructthe new converts in the principlesoftheirholyfaith. The cityofAthens was the metropolisof heathendom . Paul did not here meet with an ignorant,credulouspopulace, as at Lystra; but he encountereda peoplefamousfortheirintelligence and education. Statuesof theirgods and the deifiedheroesof historyand poetrymet theeye ineverydirection; whilemagnificentarchitecture and paintingsalsorepresentedthenationalglory and thepopularworshipofheathendeities. The sensesofthepeoplewere entrancedby the beautyand gloryof art. Sanctuariesand temples,involvinguntoldexpense,rearedtheirlofty forms on every hand . Victoriesof arms , and deedsof celebratedmen ,were commemorated by sculptures,shrines,and tablets. Allthesethings made thisrenowned citylikea vastgalleryof art. And as Paul lookedupon thebeautyand grandeursurroundinghim, and saw the citycrowded with idols,his spiritwas stirredwith jealousyfor God ,whom he saw dishonoredon every side.
