86 LIFE OF PAUL . 1 tianitythesuspicionwhichhad heretoforerested upon themselves. In hisfirstEpistletotheThessalonians,Paul says,"For ourgospelcame not untoyou inword only, butalsoinpower, and in theHolyGhost, and inmuch assurance; as ye know what mannerof men we were among you foryour sake. And ye became followersof us,and of the Lord, havingreceivedtheword in much affliction, with joyof theHoly Ghost; sothatye wereensamples to allthat believe in Macedonia and Achaia ."" Those who preachunpopulartruthin ourday meet with determinedresistance, asdidtheapostles. They needexpectno more favorablereceptionfrom a largemajorityof professedChristians than did Paul from his Jewish brethren . There willbe a union of opposingelementsagainst them ; for however diverse from each other differentorganizationsmay be in theirsentiments and religiousfaith, theirforcesare unitedin tramplingunder footthe fourthcommandment in the law of God . Those who will not themselves accept the truth are most zealous that others shall not receiveit; and thoseare not wanting who perseveringlymanufacturefalsehoods, and stirup the base passionsof the peopleto make the truth of God of none effect. But themessengersof Christ must arm themselves with watchfulness and prayer, and move forwardwith faith, firmness, and courage, and, in the name of Jesus, keep at theirwork, asdidthe apostles. They must sound the note of warning to the world, teachingthe transgressorsof the law what sin is,and pointingthem to JesusChristasitsgreat and onlyremedy.
