OPPOSITION AT THESSALONICA . 85 citedthe passionsof theworthlessmob by cunningly devised falsehoods, and incitedthem to make an uproariousassaultupon the house of Jason,thetemporaryhome of theapostles. This they did with a fury more likethat of wild beasts than of men . They had been instructed by the Jews to bringout Paul and Silas, and drag them to the authorities,accusingthem of creatingallthisuproar, and of raisingan insurrection . When theyhad broken intothe house,however,theyfound thattheapostleswere notthere. Friendswho had apprehendedwhat was about tooccur,had hastenedthem outof thecity, and theyhad departedforBerea. In theirmad disappointmentat not findingPaul and Silas,the mob seizedJason and hisbrother,and dragged them beforethe authoritieswith thecomplaint: " These thathave turnedtheworldupsidedown arecome hitheralso; whom Jason hath received; and thesealldo contraryto thedecreesof Cæsar , sayingthatthereisanotherking,one Jesús." The Jews interpretedthe words of Paul to mean that Christ would come the second time in thatgeneration, and reign upon the earth as king overallnations. The chargewas brought againsttheapostleswith somuch determination thatthe magistratescreditedit,and put Jason under bondstokeep thepeace,asPaul and Silas were not to be found. The persecutingJews flatteredthemselvesthatby theircoursetoward theChristianstheyhad regainedtheconfidence of the magistrates, and had establishedtheir reputationas loyalcitizens,whilethey had, at thesame time,gratifiedtheirmalicetoward the apostles,and transferredtotheconvertstoChris-
