They compliedwiththe requestof the magistrates,but did not hastentheirdeparture precipitously. They went rejoicingfrom the prisontothehouseof Lydia,where theymet the new convertsto the faithof Christ,and related allthe wonderfuldealingsof God with them. They relatedtheirnight'sexperience,and thecon-versionof the keeperof the prison, and of the prisoners. The apostlesviewedtheirlaborsin Philippias not in vain. They theremet much opposition and persecution; but the interventionof Providence in theirbehalf, and the conversionof the jailerand allhishouse,more than atonedforthe disgraceand sufferingthey had endured. The Philippianssaw representedin the deportment and presenceof mind oftheapostlesthespiritof thereligionofJesusChrist. The apostlesmight have fled when the earthquakeopened their prisondoorsand loosenedtheirfetters; but that would have been an acknowledgment thatthey were criminals, which would have been a disgracetothegospelof Christ;thejailerwould have been exposedto the penaltyof death,and thegeneralinfluencewould have beenbad. As itwas,Paul controlledtheliberatedprisonersso perfectlythatnotone attemptedtoescape. The Philippianscould but acknowledgethe nobilityand generosityof the apostlesin their courseof action,especiallyin forbearingtoappealtoa higherpower againstthemagistrates who had persecutedthem.
