When the officersinformed the magistratesin the morning of what had occurred at the prison,they were alarmed, and sentthe sergeantsto liberatethe apostlesfrom prison. "But Paul saiduntothem,They have beatenus openly,uncondemned, being Romans , and have castus intoprison; and now do theythrustus out privily? nay, verily; but letthem come themselves and fetch us out ." Paul and Silasfeltthattomaintainthedignity of Christ'schurch,theymust not submitto the illegalcourseproposedby theRoman magistrates. The apostleswere Roman citizens,and itwas unlawfulto scourgea Roman ,save for the most flagrantcrime,or to deprivehim of hisliberty without a fairtrialand condemnation. They had beenpubliclythrustintoprison,and now refusedtobe privatelyreleased,withoutproperacknowledgmentson the part of the magistrates. When thisword was brought tothe authorities, they were alarmed for fearthe apostleswould make complaint of theirunlawful treatment to the emperor, and cause the magistratesto lose theirpositions. They accordinglyvisitedthe prison,apologizedto theapostlesfortheirinjusticeand cruelty,and themselvesconductedthem outof theprison,and entreatedthem to depart outof thecity.
