A cry was thereforeraisedagainst the servantsof God ,formany were interestedin gaining money by Satanicdelusions. They brought Paul and Silasbeforethe magistrateswith the charge that “thesemen , being Jews, do exceedinglytroubleour city, and teach customs which are not lawful for us to receive,neither to observe,being Romans ." Satan stirredup a frenzyamong the people. A mob spiritprevailed,and was sanctionedby the authorities, who , with theirofficialhands, tore the clothesfrom the apostles, and commanded them tobe scourged. "And when theyhad laid many stripesupon them, they castthem into prison,chargingthejailerto keep them safely; who ,havingreceivedsucha charge,thrustthem intotheinnerprison,and made theirfeetfastin the stocks ." The apostleswereleftin a verypainfulcondition. Theirlaceratedand bleedingbacks were in contactwith the rough stone floor,while their feetwere elevated and bound fast in the stocks. In thisunnaturalpositiontheysufferedextreme torture; yet they did not groan nor complain, but conversedwith and encouragedeach other, and praisedGod with gratefulheartsthat they were found worthy tosuffershame for hisdearname . Paul was remindedof thepersecutionhe had been instrumentalin heapingupon thedisciplesof Christ,and he was devoutlythankful that his eyes had been opened to see,and his hearttofeel,theglorioustruthsof the gospelof theSon of God ,and thathe had been privileged topreachthedoctrinewhichhehad oncedespised.
