74 LIFE OF PAUL . At Philippi, Lydia, of the cityof Thyatira, heardtheapostles,and herheartwas open to receive the truth. She and her household were convertedand baptized, and she entreatedthe apostlestomake herhousetheirhome. Day afterday,astheywent totheirdevotions, a woman withthe spiritof divinationfollowed them ,crying," These men arethe servantsof the most highGod, which show untous the way of salvation." Thiswoman was a specialagentof Satan; and,as thedevilswere troubledby the presenceof Christ,sotheevilspiritwhich possessedherwas illat easeinthe presenceof the apostles. Satanknew thathiskingdom was invaded,and tookthisway of opposingthe work of the ministers of God . The words of recommendationutteredby thiswoman were an injury tothecause,distractingthemindsof thepeoplefrom the truthspresentedto them,and throwing disreputeupon the work by causingpeople to believethat the men who spoke with the Spiritand power of God were actuatedby the same spiritasthisemissaryofSatan. The apostlesenduredthisoppositionforseveral days; thenPaul,under inspirationof theSpirit of God ,commanded the evilspirittoleavethe woman . Satan was thus met and rebuked . The immediate and continued silence of the woman testifiedthat the apostleswere the servantsof God ,and thatthedemon had acknowledgedthem to be such, and had obeyed theircommand . When the woman was dispossessedof the spirit of the devil,and restoredto herself,her masters were alarmedfortheircraft. They saw thatall hope of receivingmoney from her divinations and soothsayingswas at an end,and perceived
