The other prisoners heardwithastonishmentthevoiceof prayerand praiseissuingfromtheinnerprison. Theyhad been accustomed to hear shrieks and moans , cursingand swearing, breakingat nightupon thesilenceof theprison; but theyhad neverbeforeheard the words of prayer and praiseascendingfrom thatgloomy cell. The guardsand prisonersmarveledwho were thesemen who, cold,hungry,and tortured,couldstillrejoiceand conversecheerfullywitheachother. Meanwhilethemagistrateshad returnedto theirhomes congratulatingthemselvesupon having quelleda tumult by theirprompt andde-cisivemeasures. But upon theirway home they heard more fullyconcerningthe characterand work of the men whom theyhad sentencedto scourgingand imprisonment. They alsosaw the woman who had been freed from Satanic influence, and who had been a very troublesome subjecttothem. They were sensiblystruckby the change in her countenanceand demeanor. She had become quiet,peaceful,and possessedof herrightmind. They wereindignantwiththemselveswhen they discoveredthat in allprobabilitytheyhad visitedupon two innocentmen the rigorouspenaltyof theRoman law against the worst criminals. They decidedthatin the morning theywould command them to be privatelyreleased,and escortedin safetyfrom the city,beyondthedangerof violencefromthemob . But while men were crueland vindictive,or criminallynegligentof the solemn responsibilitiesdevolvinguponthem,God had notforgotten
