62 LIFE OF PAUL . Timothy had been convertedthrough the ministrationof Paul,and was an eye-witnessof the sufferingsof theapostleupon thisoccasion. He stoodby hisapparentlydeadbody,and saw himarise,bruisedand coveredwith blood,not with groansor murmurings upon hislips, but with praisestoJesusChrist,thathe was permittedtosufferfor hisname . In one of the epistlesof Paul toTimothy he referstohispersonalknowledge of thisoccurrence. Timothy became the most importanthelpto Paul and to the church. He was thefaithfulcompanion of the apostlein his trialsand in his joys. The father of Timothy was a Greck; but hismother was a Jewess, and he had beenthoroughlyeducatedin theJewishreligion. CHAPTER VI . JEW AND GENTILE . THE next day afterthe stoningof Paul, the apostlesleftthecity,accordingto the direction ofChrist: "When theypersecuteyou inthiscity, fleeye intoanother." They departedforDerbe, where theirlaborswere blessed,and many souls were led to embrace the truth.
