Paul and Barnabas soon after returned to Antiochin Syria, where they again laboredfor some time; and many Gentilesthereembraced the doctrine of Christ. But certain Jews from Judea raiseda generalconsternationamong the believingGentilesby agitatingthequestionof circumcision. They assertedwith great assurance,that none couldbe saved without being circumcised and keeping the entireceremoniallaw. Thiswas an importantquestion,and one which affectedthechurchin a verygreatdegree. Paul and Barnabas met it with promptness,and opposed introducingthe subjectto the Gentiles. They were opposedinthisby thebelievingJews of Antioch, who favoredthe positionof those from Judea . The matter resulted in much discussionand want of harmony in the church, untilfinallythe church at Antioch,apprehending that a divisionamong them would occur from any furtherdiscussionof the question,decided to send Paul and Barnabas,together with some responsiblemen of Antioch,to Jerusalem,tolay thematterbeforethe apostlesand elders. There they were to meet delegatesfrom the different churches , and those who had come to attend the approachingannual festivals. Meanwhile all controversywas to cease until a finaldecision shouldbe made by the responsiblemen of the church. Thisdecisionwas thentobe universally acceptedby thevariouschurchesthroughoutthe country . The apostles, in making theirway to Jeru
