PREACHING AMONG THE HEATIHEN . 61 greatrage and fury. They hurledstonesviolently; and Paul, bruised, battered, and fainting, feltthat his end had come . The martyrdom of Stephen was brought vividlyto hismind, and the cruelparthe had actedon that occasion. He fellto the ground apparentlydead, and the infuriatedmob draggedhisinsensiblebody through thegatesof the city, and threw itbeneaththe walls. The apostlementionsthisoccurrencein thesubsequentenumerationof hissufferingsfor the truth'ssake: "Thricewas I beaten with rods; oncewas I stoned; thrice1 sufferedshipwreck; a nightand a day I have been in the deep; in journeyingsoften; in perilsof waters; in perils of robbers; in perilsby mine own countrymen; in perilsby the heathen; in perilsin the city; inperilsin the wilderness; in perilsin thesea; inperilsamong falsebrethren.” The disciplesstood around the body of Paul, lamentingover him whom theysupposedto be dead, when he suddenlyliftedhishead, and arose tohisfeetwiththe praiseof God upon his lips. To the disciplesthisseemed like a resurrection from the dead, a miracle of God to preservethe lifeof hisfaithfulservant. They rejoicedwith inexpressiblegladnessover his restoration, and praisedGod with renewed faithin the doctrine preachedby theapostles. These discipleshad been newly convertedto thefaith, throughtheteachingsof Paul, and had stoodsteadfastnotwithstandingthemisrepresentationand malignant persecutionof the Jews. In fact, the unreasoningoppositionof those wicked.men had only confirmedthesedevoted brethrenin the faithof Christ; and the restoration of Paul to lifeseemed to setthe signet of God upon theirbelief.
