58 LIFE OF PAUL . When these ministers of God ascertained the cause of thisvisitand its attendant excitement, they were filledwith indignationand horror. They rent theirclothing,and rushedin among the multitudeto preventfurtherproceedings. Paul,ina loud, ringingvoicethatroseabovethe noiseof the multitude,demanded theirattention; and,as thetumult was suddenlyquelled,he inquired,- " Sirs, why do ye thesethings? We also are men of likepassionswith you,and preach untoyou thatye shouldturnfrom thesevanities unto the livingGod,which made heaven, and earth, and the sea,and allthingsthat aretherein; who in times past sufferedallnationsto walk intheirown ways. Nevertheless,heleftnothimselfwithoutwitness,inthathe didgood,and gave us rainfrom heaven,and fruitfulseasons,filling ourheartswith foodand gladness.' " The peoplelistenedtothewords of Paul with manifestimpatience. Theirsuperstitionand enthusiasmhad been so great in regard to the apostlesthat they were lothto acknowledgetheir error,and have theirexpectationsand purposes thwarted. Notwithstandingthe apostlespositivelydeniedthedivinityattributedto them by the heathen , and Paul endeavored to direct their minds tothetrueGod astheonlyobjectworthy of worship,itwas stillmost difficulttoturn them from theirpurpose. They reasonedthat theyhad with theirown eyesbeheldthe miraculouspower exercisedby theapostles;thattheyhad seena cripplewho hadneverbeforeusedhislimbs,made toleapand rejoiceinperfecthealthand strength,throughthe exerciseof the marvelouspower possessedby
