Strengthcame with thiseffort of faith; and he who had been a cripplewalked and leapedas though he had never experienced an infirmity. Thiswork performedonthecripplewas a marvel to allbeholders. The subjectwas so well known ,and thecurewas socomplete,thatthere was no room forskepticismon theirpart. The Lycaonians were convincedthat supernatural power attendedthe laborsof the apostles, and they criedout with great enthusiasmthatthe gods had come down to them from Heaven in the likenessof men . Thisbeliefwas in harmony with theirtraditionsthat gods visitedthe earth. They conceivedtheideathatthe greatheathen deities,Jupiterand Mercury,were in theirmidst inthepersonsofPauland Barnabas. The former theybelievedtobe Mercury; forPaulwas active, earnest,quick,and eloquentwith words of warning and exhortation. Barnabas was believedto be Jupiter,thefatherofgods,becauseofhisvenerableappearance,hisdignifiedbearing,and the mildnessand benevolenceexpressedin hiscountenance . The news ofthemiraculouscureof thecripple was soonnoised throughout allthat region, until a generalexcitementwas aroused,and priests from thetempleof the gods preparedtodo the apostleshonor, as visitantsfrom the courtsof Heaven ,to sacrificebeaststo them , and to bring offeringsofgarlandsand preciousthings. The apostleshad soughtretirementand restina private dwelling,when theirattentionwas attracted by the sound of music, and the enthusiastic shoutingof a vast assembly, who had come to thegateofthehousewhere theywere abiding.
