PREACHING AMONG THE HEATHEN . 53 Miracleswere daily wrought by the disciples throughthepower of God ; and allwhose minds were open toevidencewere affectedby theconvincingpower of thesethings. This increasingpopularityof the doctrineof Christstirredthe unbelievingJews tofreshopposition. They werefilledwithenvy and hatred, and determinedtostopthelaborsof the apostles atonce. They went tothe authorities,and represented their work in the most false and exaggeratedlight,leadingthe officerstofearthat the entirecitywas in danger of being incitedto insurrection. They statedthat greatnumbers were attachingthemselvesto the apostles, and suggestedthat itwas for secretand dangerous designs. In conséquenceof thesecharges,the disciples were repeatedlybroughtbeforethe authorities; but in everycasetheyso ably defendedthemselvesbeforethepeople,that,althoughthe magistrateswere prejudicedagainstthem by the falsestatementstheyhad heard,theydared not condemn them. They couldbut acknowledge thattheteachingsof theapostleswerecalculated to make men virtuous,law -abiding citizens. The unprejudicedJews and Greeks took the positionthat the morals and good orderof the citywould be improvedifthe apostleswere allowed to remain and work there. Upon the occasionswhen theapostleswere broughtbefore the authorities, theirdefense was so clear and sensible, and the statement which they gave of theirdoctrinewas so calm and comprehensive, that a considerable influence was exerted in their favor.
