The Jews perceivedthattheireffortstothwart the work of the apostleswere unavailing,and onlyresultedin adding greaternumbers to the new faith. The rage ofthe Jews was worked up to such a pitchon thisaccountthattheydetermined to compass theirends in some manner . They stirredup the worst passionsof the ignorant,noisymob , creatinga tumult which they attributedto the effortsof the apostles. They thenpreparedto make a falsechargeof telling force,and togain thehelpof the magistratesin carryingout theirpurpose. They determined that theapostlesshouldhave no opportunityto vindicatethemselves; butthatmob power should interfere,and put a stoptotheirlaborsby stoning them to death. Friendsof the apostles,althoughunbelievers, warned them ofthedesignsofthemaliciousJews, and urged them not to exposethemselvesuselesslyto theirfury,but to escapefortheirlives. They accordinglydepartedfrom Iconium in secret,and leftthe faithfuland opposingparties tobattleforthemselves,trustingGod togivevictoryto thedoctrineof Christ. But theyby no means tooka finalleaveof Iconium; theypurposedto return, afterthe excitementthen raginghad abated,and completethe work theyhad begun . Thosewho observeand teachthebindingclaims ofGod'slaw,frequentlyreceive,ina degree,similartreatmentto that of the apostlesat Iconium . They oftenmeet a bitteroppositionfrom ministersand peoplewho persistentlyrefusethelight ofGod ,who ,by misrepresentationand falsehood,
