During the life of Christ on earth he had sought to lead the Jews out of theirexclusiveness. The conversionof the centurion, and of the Syrophenicianwoman , were instancesof his direct work outside of the acknowledged people of Israel. The time had now come for active and continued work among the Gentiles, of whom whole communitiesreceivedthe gospel gladly, and glorifiedGod for the lightof an intelligentfaith. The unbeliefand malice of the Jews did not turn asidethe purpose of God ; for a new Israelwas grafted intothe old olivetree. The synagogueswere closedagainstthe apostles; but privatehouseswere thrown open fortheiruse,and publicbuildingsof theGentiles were alsoused in which topreachtheword of God . The Jews , however , were not satisfiedwith closingtheirsynagoguesagainsttheapostles,but desiredto banish them from that region. To effectthispurpose,theysoughttoprejudicecertaindevout and honorablewomen ,who had great influencewith the government, and alsomen of influence. Thistheyaccomplishedby subtle arts, and falsereports. These personsof good reputecomplainedtothe authoritiesagainstthe apostles,and theywere accordinglyexpelledfrom that district. On thisoccasionthe apostlesfollowedthe instruction of Christ: " Whosoever shall not receiveyou,nor hear you,when ye departthence,
