The Gentiles,on the otherhand, rejoicedexceedinglythat Christrecognizedthem as the childrenof God ,and with.gratefulheartsthey listenedto the word preached. The apostles now clearlydiscernedtheirduty,and thework which God would have them do. They turned without hesitationto the Gentiles, preaching Christto them , and leaving the Jews to their bigotry, blindness of mind, and hardness of heart. The mind of Paul had been well prepared tomake thisdecision,by the circumstances attendinghisconversion,hisvisioninthetemple at Jerusalem,hisappointmentby God topreach to the Gentiles, and the successwhich had already crowned hiseffortsamong them . When Paul and Barnabas turned from the Jews who deridedthem, they addressedthem boldly, saying, " It was necessarythat the word of God shouldfirsthave beenspokento you; but secingye put itfrom you,and judge yourselvesunworthy of everlastinglife, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us,saying,I have settheetobe a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldestbe for salvation unto the ends of the earth." Thisgatheringinof theGentilestothechurch of God had been tracedby the pen of inspiration,buthad beenbut faintlyunderstood. Hosea had said, " Yet the number of the children of Israelshall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered ; and it shall come topass,thatinthe placewhere itwas saiduntothem,Ye are not my people,thereitshall be saiduntothem,Ye are the sonsof the living
