The apostles createda greatinterestintheplace,among both Jews and Gentiles. They encouraged the believersand convertsto stand fastin theirfaith, and to continuein the grace of God . The interestto hear thewords of theapostleswas sogreatthat the whole citycame togetheron the next Sabbath day. But now ,as in the days of Christ, when the Jewish priestsand rulers saw the multitudes that had assembled to hear the new doctrine,theywere moved by envy and jealousy, and contradictedthewords of theapostleswith blasphemy. Their old bigotryand prejudice were also aroused, when they perceivedgreat numbers of Gentilesminglingwiththe Jews in thecongregation. They couldnot endurethat theGentilesshouldenjoyreligiousprivilegeson an equalitywith themselves,but clungtenaciouslytotheideathattheblessingofGod was reservedexclusivelyforthem. Thishad ever beenthe greatsinof theJews,which Christ,on severaloccasions,had rebuked .They listened, on one Sabbathday,with intenseinterestto the teachingsof Paul and Barnabas,who preachedJesusas thepromisedMessiah; and upon the next Sabbath day,because of the multitude of Gentiles who assembled also tohear them,they were excitedto a frenzyof indignation,thewords of the apostleswere dis-tortedin theirminds,and theywere unfittedto weigh the evidencepresentedby them.
