" And the hand of theLord was withthem ; and a greatnumberbelieved,and turnedunto theLord." When the believersin Jerusalemheard the good tidings, theyrejoiced; and Barnabas, "a good man ,and fullof the Holy Ghost and of faith," was sent toAntioch,the metropolisof Syria,to help the church there. He labored therewith greatsuc-cess. As the work increased, he solicitedand obtainedthehelpof Paul; and the two disciples laboredtogetherinthatcityfora year,teaching the people, and adding to the numbers of the church of Christ . Antioch had a largepopulationboth of Jews and Gentiles; itwas a great resortfor loversof easeand pleasure, becauseof the healthfulness of itssituation, itsbeautifulscenery, and the wealth, culture, and refinement that centered there. Itsextensivecommerce made ita place of greatimportance,where peopleof allnationalitieswere found. It was thereforea cityof luxuryand vice. The retributionof God finally came upon Antioch, becauseof the wickedness of its inhabitants . Itwas here thatthediscipleswere firstcalled Christians.
