By the lightof the moral law, which he had believedhimselftobe zealouslykeeping,Saul saw himselfa sinnerof sinners. He repented,thatis, died to sin,became obedientto the law of God , exercisedfaith in Jesus Christ as his Saviour, was baptized, and preachedJesusas earnestly and zealouslyas he had once denounced him .The Redeemer of the world does not sanction experienceand exercisein religiousmattersindependentof his organizedand acknowledged church. Many have an ideathat theyare responsibleto Christalonefortheirlightand experience,independentofhisrecognizedfollowers on earth. But in thehistoryof theconversion ofSaul,importantprinciplesaregivenus,which we shouldeverbear in mind. He was brought directlyintothepresenceof Christ. He was one whom Christintendedfor a most important work ,one who was to be " a chosen vessel" unto him; yet he did not personallyimpartto him the lessonsof truth. He arrested his course and convictedhim ; but when askedby him," What wilt thou have me to do?" the Saviourplaced him in connectionwith hischurch, and let them direct him what to do . Jesus is the friend of sinners; his heart is touchedby theirwoe ; he has allpower,both in Heaven and upon earth; but he respectsthe means which he has ordained for the enlightenment and salvationof men ; he directssinnersto thechurch,which he has made a channeloflight to the world .
