He believeditto be his duty to strivewith hisutmostpower toexterminatethe alarming doctrinethat Jesus was the Prince of life; and with conscientiouszeal he had become a perseveringpersecutorof thechurchof Christ. But Jesus,whose name of allothers he most hatedand despised,had revealedhimselftoSaul, for the purposeof arrestinghim in his mad career,and of making,from thismostunpromisingsubject, an instrumentby which to bear the gospel to the Gentiles. Saul was overwhelmed by thisrevelation,and perceivedthat inopposingJesusof Nazareth,he had arrayed himself againstthe Redeemer of the world. Overcome by a senseof hisguilt,he criedout, " Lord, what wilt thou have me to do ?" Jesus did not then and there inform him of the work he had assignedhim ,but senthim for instruction to theverydiscipleswhom he had so bitterly persecuted. The marvelouslightthatilluminatedthedarkness of Saul was the work of the Lord; but there was also a work that was to be done for him by the disciplesof Christ. The answer to Saul'squestionis, "Arise,and go intothecity, and it shallbe told theewhat thou must do." Jesussends the inquiringJew tohischurch,to obtainfrom them a knowledge of his duty. Christperformed the work of revelationand conviction; and now the penitentwas in a condition to learn of those whom God had ordained toteachhistruth. Thus Jesusgave sanctionto theauthorityof hisorganizedchurch,andplaced
