CONVERSION OF SAUL . 27 thepriestsand rulers, closinghiseyesand ears againstthe most strikingevidence, and relentlesslyurgingon the persecutionof the believers in Christ . He was in lonelyseclusion; he had no communicationwith the church, for theyhad been warned of the purposeof his journey to Damascus by thebelieversinJerusalem; and they believedthathe was actinga part the betterto carryout hisdesignof persecutingthem. He had no desiretoappealtotheunconvertedJews ; forhe knew theywould notlistentoor heed his statements. He seemed to be utterlyshut out from human sympathy; and he reflected, and prayedwith a thoroughlybroken and repentant spirit. Those three days were likethree years to the blind and conscience-smitten Jew . He was no novicein the Scriptures, and in hisdarkness and solitudehe recalledthe passageswhich referred tothe Messiah, and traceddown the prophecies, with a memory sharpenedby theconvictionthat had taken possessionof hismind. He became astonished at his former blindness of understanding, and at the blindnessof the Jews in general, inrejectingJesusasthe promisedMessiah. Allnow seemedplaintohim, and he knew that it was prejudiceand unbeliefwhich had cloudedhisperceptions, and preventedhim from discerningin Jesus of Nazareth the Messiah of prophecy. This wonderful conversion of Saul demonstrates in a startlingmanner the miraculouspower of Christinconvictingthemind and heartof man . Saul had verilybelievedthat to have faithin Jesuswas virtuallytorepudiatethe law of God
