MARTYRDOM OF PAUL AND PETER . 333 meetreligiousbigotryand heathensuperstition, who counted not theirlivesdear unto themselves if theymightbear aloftthelightofthecrossamid thedark mazes of infidelity,-all thesehe hears witnessingtoJesusastheSon of theMostHigh, theSaviourof theworld. The martyr'sshoutof triumph,thefearlesstestimonyforthefaith,falls upon hisear from therack, thestake,the dungeon,from thedensand cavesof theearth,from steadfastsouls who are destitute, afflicted, tormented,yet of whom the worldis not worthy. With a continuallystrengtheningassurancethey declare, " I know whom I have believed." And asthey yieldup theirlivesas witnessesforthe faith,theybeara solemn,condemningtestimony tothe world,declaringthat He in whom they trustedhas proved himselfableto save to the uttermost . The Captainof our salvationhas prepared hisservantforthelastgreatconflict. Ransomed by thesacrificeof Christ,washed from sin inhis blood,and clothedin hisrighteousness,Paul has thewitnessinhimselfthathissoulispreciousin the sightof hisRedeemer. His lifeishid with ChristinGod ,and he ispersuadedthatHe who has conquereddeath isabletokeepthat which iscommitted tohis trust. His mind graspsthe Saviour'spromise,“I willraisehim up at the lastday. " His thoughtsand hopesarecentered in the second advent of his Lord . And as the sword of the executioner descends, and the shadowsofdeathgatheraboutthemartyr'ssoul, hislatestthought springsforward, as willhis earliestthoughtin thegreatawakening,tomeet theLifegiverwho shallwelcome him tothe joy of the blest .
