It isnot the absenceof temptationor trialthat ismost favorablefor thedevelopmentof Christian character . Where there are fewest difficulties to meet ,the Christianis in the greatestdanger of spiritualslothfulness. The God of allgrace haspromisedthathispeopleshallnotbe tempted above thatwhich theyareabletobear,but that with the temptationhe willmake a way of escape. Constantexposuretorebuffsand opposition,willleadthe Christiantogreaterwatchfulness and more earnestprayer to the mighty Helper. Extraordinarytrials, enduredthrough thegraceof God ,willgivehim a deeperexperienceand greaterspiritualstrength,as vigilance, patience,and fortitudeare calledinto exercise. The followersof Christshouldexpecttobe regarded by the world with no more favorthan was their Master . But he who has God for his friendand helpercan affordto spend a long winterofchillingneglect,abuse,and persecution. By thegracewhich Christimparts,he can maintain his faith and trust in God under the sorest trials. He recallstheSaviour'sexample,and he feelsthathe canendureafflictionand persecution ifhe may thusgainsimplicityofcharacter,lowlinessof heart, and an abidingtrustin Jesus. The triumph of Christianfaithistosuffer,and be strong; to submit,and thus conquer; to be killedallthe day long,and yetto live; to bear the cross,and thus win the crown of immortal glory.
