The truthhad found them where they were,and theretheywould remain,and by theirlifeand charactertestifyof itstransformingpower. The exampleof those Christianshas greatweight,from thefactthat theyhad directintercoursewithPaul,and therefore enjoyed the benefitof his instructionand counsel. It teachesthat believersarenot always to withdraw from positionsof difficultyand trial,and placethemselveswhere there would be lesstemptationor opposition. Let us ever bear in mind that our Saviour lefttheheavenlycourts,and came to a worldpollutedby sin. By hisown lifehe has shown his followershow they can be in the world, and yet notbe oftheworld. He came not topartakeof itsdelusivepleasures,to be swayed by itscustoms,or tofollowitspractices,but to seek and tosavethelost. With thisobject,and thisonly, can the Christian consent to remain in the company oftheungodly.No onewho isseekingtosavehissoulshould withoutgood reasonplacehimselfin an uncongenialatmosphere,orwhere he willbesurrounded by hindrancesto a religiouslife; but if in such a positionhe has receivedthe truth,he should diligentlyinquireif God has not therea work forhim to do forthe saving ofothersouls.
