WHILE Paul's labors were blessed to the conversionof many soulsand thestrengtheningand encouragementofthebelievers,cloudsweregatheringthat threatenedhis own safetyas wellas the prosperityof thechurch. When ,on his arrivalat Rome ,he was placedin chargeof the captainof the imperialguards,the officewas filledby a man ofjusticeand integrity,by whose clemencyhe was leftcomparativelyfreetopursuethework ofthegospel. But beforetheclose of the two years' imprisonment, thisman was replacedby an officialwhose viceand tyranny renderedhis name infamous. The apostlecould expect no favor from this slave of lust and cruelty. The Jews were now more active than ever beforein theireffortsagainst,Paul. They had found an ablehelperin the profligatewoman whom Nero had made his second wife, and who , beinga Jewishproselyte,would lend allher influencetosecondtheirmurderousdesignsagainst the Christian champion . Paulhad littlereasontohope forjusticefrom the Cæsar towhom he had appealed. Nero was more debased in morals,more frivolousin character,and atthesame timecapableof more atrociouscruelty,than any rulerwho had preceded him. The reinsof governmentcouldnot have been intrustedto a more inhuman despot. The firstyear of hisreignhad beenmarked by the poisoningofhisyoung step-brother,who was the rightfulheirtothethrone.
