CONVERSION OF SAUL . 21 CHAPTER II . CONVERSION OF SAUL . THE mind of Saulwas greatlystirredby the triumphantdeathof Stephen. He was shaken inhisprejudice;buttheopinionsandarguments of the priestsand rulersfinallyconvincedhim that Stephen was a blasphemer; that Jesus Christwhom he preachedwas an impostor,and that thoseministeringin holy officesmust be right. Being a man ofdecidedmind and strong purpose, he became very bitterin hisoppositionto Christianity, afterhavingonceentirely settledin hismind thatthe viewsof the priests and scribeswere right. His zealled him to voluntarilyengage inpersecutingthebelievers. He causedholy men to be dragged beforethe councils,and to be imprisoned or condemned to deathwithoutevidenceof any offense,save their faithin Jesus. Of a similarcharacter,though in a different direction, was the zeal of James and John, when theywould have calleddown firefrom heaven to consume thosewho slighted and scorned their Master . Saulwas aboutto journeyto Damascus upon his own business; but he was determined to accomplisha doublepurpose,by searchingout,as he went , all the believersin Christ. For this purposehe obtainedlettersfrom the highpriest toreadinthesynagogues,which authorizedhim to seizeallthosewho were suspectedof being believersin Jesus,and tosend them by messengerstoJerusalem,thereto be triedand punished.
