As the weary travelersnearedDamascus,the eyesofSaulrestedwithpleasureupon thefertile land,thebeautifulgardens,thefruitfulorchards, and thecoolstreamsthat ran murmuring amid thefreshgreenshrubbery. It was very refreshingtolookupon such a sceneaftera long,wearisomejourneyovera desolatewaste. WhileSaul,with hiscompanions,was gazing and admiring,suddenlya lightabove thebrightnessofthe sun shone round about him , " and he fellto the earth,and heard a voicesaying unto him, Saul, Saul,why persecutestthou me ? And he said,who art thou,Lord ? And the Lord said,I am Jesuswhom thou persecutest; itishard for theetokick againstthepricks." The scenewas one of thegreatestconfusion. The companionsof Saulwere strickenwith terror,and almostblindedby the intensityof the light. They heard the voice,but saw no one, and tothem allwas unintelligibleand mysteri-ous. But Saul,lyingprostrateupon theground, understoodthe words that were spoken ,and saw clearlybeforehim the Son of God . One look upon that gloriousBeing,imprintedhis image foreverupon thesoulof thestrickenJew . The words struckhome to hisheartwith appalling force. A floodoflightpouredinupon thedarkenedchambersof his mind,revealinghis igno-rance and error. He saw that whileimagining himselftobe zealouslyservingGod in persecutingthefollowersofChrist,he had inrealitybeen doing the work of Satan .
