Therehad been no legalsentencepassedupon Stephen; but theRoman authoritieswere bribed by largesums of money to make no investigation of the case. Saul seemed to be imbued with a frenziedzealatthesceneof Stephen'strialand death. He seemed to be angered at hisown secretconvictionsthat Stephen was honoredof God attheveryperiodwhen he was dishonoredof men . He continuedto persecutethe church ofGod ,huntingthem down ,seizingthem intheir houses,and deliveringthem up tothepriestsand rulersfor imprisonmentand death. His zealin carryingforwardthepersecutionwas a terrorto the Christians in Jerusalem . The Roman authoritiesmade no specialeffortto staythecruel work , and secretlyaided the Jews in order to conciliatethem , and to secure their favor . Saulwas greatlyesteemedby theJews forhis zealinpersecutingthebelievers. Afterthedeath of Stephen, he was electeda member of the Sanhedrim council,in considerationof the part he had acted on that occasion. This learned and zealousrabbiwas a mighty instrumentin the hand of Satan to carryout his rebellion againstthe Son of God ; but he was soon tobe employed to buildup the church he was now tearingdown . A Mightier than Satan had selectedSaul totake the placeof the martyred Stephen,topreachand sufferforhisname ,and tospreadfarand widethegladtidingsof salvationthrough hisblood.
