These traitsof characterare more preciousin the sightof our Lord than offeringsof gold or silver. They are more acceptableto him than themost costlysacrifice. There isthe same dislikeof reproofand correctionamong theprofessedpeopleof God to-day as in the days of our Saviour. There is the same dispositionto lean toward theworld and to followitsmocking shadows. The presence of ambitious, selfish, time-servingmembers is imperilingthechurch,whose greatestdanger is from worldly conformity. Such members are constantlyexerting an influenceto unite the church more closelywith the world. They are doingthework of Satan. When God sendshis servantswithwordsof warningorcounsel,these traitorsto theirholy trustrejectthe Heavensentmessage,and thusnotonlyslightthe grace of Christ themselves, but lead others also to smothertheirconvictionsand losethe proffered blessing. By resistanceto the truth,the heartsof such aresettlingdown intothe fatalhardnessof confirmedimpenitence. They are deceivingthemselves,and deceivingothers. They areChristians by profession; they pay outward homage toChrist; theyunitein theservicesof thesanctuary; and yet the heart, whose loyaltyalone Jesusprizes,isestrangedfrom him. They have a name tolive,but are dead. They are leftto the darknessthey have chosen,-the blackness of eternalnight.
