232 LIFE OF PAUL . to stand in his way and hinderhis usefulness, the Lord removes from them the blessingwhich he gave . Satan is constantlyworking through his agentsto disheartenand destroythosewhom God has chosentoaccomplisha greatand good work . They may be ready to sacrificeeven their own lifefor the advancement of the cause of Christ, yet the great deceiver will suggest doubts, distrust, jealousy, concerning them ,that if entertained will undermine confidence in their integrityof character, and thus crippletheir usefulness. Too often he succeeds in working through theirown brethren,to bring upon them such sorrow and anguish of heart that God graciouslyinterposestogivehispersecutedservantsrest. After the hands arefoldedupon the pulselessbreast, afterthevoiceof warning and encouragementissilent, then death may accomplishthatwhich lifehas failedtodo; then the obduratemay be arousedto seeand prizethe blessingsthey have castfrom them . The great work for us as Christiansisnot to criticisethe character and motives of others, but to closelyexamine our own heart and life, to jealouslyguard ourselvesagainstthe suggestions of Satan . We should bear in mind that it is not thehearersof thelaw that arejustifiedbeforeGod ,but thedoersof thelaw. If theprinciplesof God'slaw ruleinour hearts,we shall have the spiritof Christ; we shallmanifest in our dailylifethat mercy which isbetterthan sacrifice. Every Christianmust be a learnerin the school of Christ ; and there is need of diligent and perseveringefforttoreach thatstandard of righteousnesswhich God's word requires.
