But he met inStephen one as highlyeducatedas himself,and one who had a fullunderstandingof the purposeof God in thespreadingof thegospeltoothernations. The priestsand rulersprevailednothing against theclear,calm wisdom of Stephen,thoughthey were vehement intheiropposition. They determined to make an example of him, and, while they thus satisfiedtheirrevengefulhatred,preventothers,through fear,from adoptinghisbelief. Falsewitnesseswere hiredto testifythat they had heard him speak blasphemouswords againstthe temple and the law. Said they, "For we have heard him say,thatthisJesusof Nazareth shalldestroythis place, and shall change the customs which Moses deliveredus." As Stephenstoodfaceto facewith hisjudges, toanswertothecrime of blasphemy,a holy radiance shone upon his countenance. "And all that sat in the council, lookingsteadfastlyon him , saw his face as it had been the face of an angel." Those who exaltedMoses might have seenin the faceof the prisonerthe same holy light which radiatedthe face of that ancient prophet. Many who beheldthe lightedcountenance of Stephen trembled and veiledtheirfaces; but stubbornunbeliefand prejudicenever faltered . Stephenwas questionedastothe truthof the chargesagainsthim,and took up hisdefensein a clear, thrillingvoicethat rang through the councilhall.
