Learned rabbis and doctors of the law engaged in publicdiscussionwith him, confidentlyexpectingan easy victory. But "they were not ableto resistthe wisdom and the spirit by which he spake." Not onlydid he speakby the power of the Holy Ghost,but itwas plain thathe was a studentof the prophecies, and learnedin allmatters of the law . He ably defended the truths which he advocated, and utterlydefeatedhisopponents. The priestsand rulerswho witnessedthewonderfulmanifestationof the power thatattended theministrationof Stephen,were filledwithbitterhatred. Insteadof yieldingtotheweightof evidencehe presented,theydeterminedtosilence his voiceby puttinghim to death. They had on several occasions bribed the Roman authorities to pass over without comment instanceswhere the Jews had taken the law intotheirown hands, and tried, condemned ,and executed prisonersaccordingto theirnationalcustom. The enemies of Stephendidnotdoubt thattheycouldpursue such a course without danger to themselves. They determinedto riskthe consequencesat all events, and they thereforeseizedStephen and broughthim beforethe Sanhedrim councilfor trial. Learned Jews from the surrounding countries were summoned forthe purposeof refutingthe argumentsoftheaccused. Saulwas alsopresent, and took a leadingpart againstStephen. He broughttheweightof eloquenceand thelogicof the rabbisto bear upon the case, to convince thepeoplethatStephen was preachingdelusive
