He made plainhisown loyaltytoGod and tothe Jewishfaith,whilehe showed that the law in which theytrustedfor salvationhad not been ableto preserveIsrael from idolatry. He connected Jesus Christwith allthe Jewish history. He referredto the buildingof thetempleby Solomon,and to the words of both Solomon and Isaiah : "Howbeit the Most High dwellethnot in templesmade with hands." "Heaven ismy throne,and earthismy footstool. What house willye buildme ? saith theLord; orwhat istheplaceofmy rest? Hath notmy hand made allthesethings?" The place of God's highestworship was in Heaven . When Stephen had reached this point, there was a tumult among the people. The prisoner read his fate in the countenances before him . He perceivedthe resistancethat met hiswords, which were spokenat the dictationof theHoly Ghost. He knew thathe was givinghislasttestimony. When he connectedJesusChristwith theprophecies,and spokeofthetempleashe did, thepriest,affectingtobe horror-stricken,renthis robe. Thisactwas toStephena signalthathis voicewould soon be silencedforever. Although he was justinthemidstofhissermon,he ab-ruptlyconcludeditby suddenlybreakingaway from thechainof history,and,turningupon his infuriatedjudges,said, "Ye stiff-neckedand uncircumcisedinheartand ears,ye do alwaysresist theHoly Ghost; as yourfathersdid,so do ye. Which oftheprophetshave notyour fatherspersecuted? and they have slainthem which showed beforeofthecomingoftheJustOne ; ofwhom ye havebeennow thebetrayersand murderers; who havereceivedthelaw by thedispositionof angels, and have not kept it."
