PAUL REVISITS CORINTH . 187 Duringthisperiodhe not onlylaboredunweariedlyforthe churchin thatcity,but he found time to look forward to wider missions, and to preparefornew conquests. His thoughtswere stilloccupiedwithhiscontemplatedjourneyfrom Jerusalem to Rome . To see the Christian faith firmlyestablishedat the great centerof the known world, was one of hisdearesthopesand mostcherishedplans. A churchhad alreadybeen raisedup at Rome , and the apostledesiredto securetheirco-operationin the work which he hoped to accomplish. To preparethe way for hislaborsamong thesebrethren,asyetstrangers, he addressedthem by letter,announcinghispurposetovisitRome ,and alsoby theiraidtoplant the standard of the crossin Spain. In hisEpistleto the Romans , Paul set forth thegreatprinciplesofthegospelwhich he hoped topresentin person. He statedhispositionon thequestionswhich were agitatingthe Jewish and Gentilechurches,and showed thatthehopes and promiseswhich once belongedespeciallyto the Jews were now offeredto the Gentiles. With greatclearnessand power he presentedthedoctrineof justificationby faithin Christ. While addressingtheRoman Christians,Paul designed to instructother churches also; but how little couldhe foreseethefar-reachinginfluenceof his words! The greattruthofjustificationbyfaith, assetforthin thisepistle,has stoodthrough all theagesasa mightybeacontoguidetherepentantsinnerintotheway oflife.
