While Paul lookedwith interestand hope to new fieldsof laborin the west, he had cause for seriousapprehensionconcerningthefieldsof his former labor in the east. Tidingshad been receivedat Corinthfrom the churchesin Galatia, revealinga stateof great confusion, and even of absoluteapostasy. Judaizingteacherswere opposingthe work of the apostle, and seeking to destroythe fruitof hislabors. In almosteverychurchthereweresome memberswho were Jews by birth. To theseconvertsthe Jewish teachersfound ready access,and through them gained a foot-hold in the churches. It was impossible, by scripturalarguments, to overthrow the doctrinestaught by Paul; hence they resortedto the most unscrupulous measures to counteract his influence and weaken hisauthority. They declaredthat he had not beena discipleof Jesus,and had receivedno commissionfrom him; yethe had presumedtoteach doctrinesdirectlyopposedtothoseheldby Peter, James, and the other apostles. Thus the emissariesof Judaism succeededinalienatingmany of the Christian converts from their teacher in the gospel. Having gained this point, they induced them to return to the observance of the ceremonial law as essentialto salvation. Faith in Christ, and obedienceto the law of ten commandments, were regardedas of minor importance. Division, heresy, and sensualismwere rapidlygainingground among the believersin Galatia .
