186 LIFE OF PAUL . He bitterness, malice, and hatred; yet he was so deludedastoimaginehimselfservingGod,while inrealitydoing the work of Satan. Now the proud,passionatenatureof Saulhas beentransformedby thegraceofChrist. Hisheartyearnsoverhismostbitteropponents. The thoughtof causingthem pain, fillshim with sorrow. wrote tohisbrethren, "IfI causeyou grief,who isthereto causeme joy?" He entreatedthem to sparehim the necessityof dealingseverely with them. All thatwas good and nobleinthe characterof Saul remains, the same zealburns upon thealtarofhisheart;but ithas beenpurified, and sacredlyconsecratedto the serviceof Christ . Paul was accompaniedto Corinthby a little band of fellow-laborers,some of whom had been his companionsduringthe months spentin Macedonia ,and his assistantsin gatheringfunds forthechurchatJerusalem. He couldrelyupon thesebrethrenforsympathy and supportin the presentcrisis. And thoughthe conditionof the Corinthianchurchwas insomerespectspainfuland discouraging,therewere alsoreasonsforjoy and gratitude. Many who had once been corrupt and degradedworshipersof idols,were now sincere and humble followers of Christ . Not a few stillregardedthe apostlewith warm affection,as the one who had firstbornetothem theprecious lightof the gospel. As he once more greeted thesedisciples,and saw theproofoftheirfidelity and zeal,he feltthat his labor had not been in vain. In thesocietyof hisbelovedcompanions and thesefaithfulconverts,hisworn and troubled spiritfound restand encouragement.For threemonths Paul stayed at Corinth.
