Then he was intrusted with the sword of secularpower,he was theagentoftheSanhedrim, the Jewish inquisitor, the exterminator of heretics,seekingvictimsto imprison, to scourge, or to stone. Filledwith pride, he rode toward Damascus ,with servantsat his command toconveyhisprisonerstoJerusalem. Now hejourneys on foot, with no outward tokens of rank or power,and no officersofjusticetodo hisbidding. The utmostthathe can do to punishthosewho disregardhisauthority,istoseparatethem from a societywhose members areeverywhereregarded asignorantand degraded.
