The culatedtomake a deep impressionupon a people given to sorcery, and pridingthemselvesupon theirintercoursewith invisiblebeings. miraclesof Paul were farmore potentthan had everbeforebeen witnessedin Ephesus,and were of such a characterthattheycouldnot be imitatedby theskillofthejugglerortheenchant-ments of the sorcerer. Thus the Lord exalted his servant, even in the estimationof the idolatersthemselves, immeasurablyabove the most favoredand powerfulof themagicians. But He to whom allthe spiritsof evilwere subject,and who had givenhisservantsauthority overthem,was aboutto bringstillgreatershame and defeatupon thosewho despisedand profaned hisholy name . Sorceryhad been prohibitedin theMosaic law,on painof death,yet from timetotime ithad been secretlypracticed by apostateJews. At thetimeof Paul'svisitto Ephesus, therewere in the citycertainJewish exorcists, who , seeingthe wonders wrought by him,claimedto possessequalpower. Believing thatthe name of Jesusactedas a charm,they determinedto castout evilspiritsby the same means which the apostlehad employed . An attemptwas made by seven brothers,the sons of one Sceva, a Jewish priest. Finding a man possessedwith a demon ,theyaddressedhim, " We adjuretheeby Jesus,whom Paul preacheth." But the evilspiritanswered with scorn, " JesusI know , and Paul I know ; but who are ye?" and theone possessedsprangon them with franticviolence,and beat and bruised them ,so that they fled out of the house, naked and wounded .
