PAUL AT EPHESUS . 137 had profanedthe name of Jesus, soon became known throughoutEphesus,by Jews and Gentiles. Unmistakableproof had been given of thesacrednessof thatname ,and theperilwhich they incurredwho shouldinvoke it whilethey had no faith in Christ's divine mission. Terror seizedthe minds of many ,and the work of the gospelwas regardedby allwith awe and reverence . Factswhich had previouslybeen concealed were now broughttolight. In acceptingChristianity, some of the brethrenhad not fully renouncedtheirheathensuperstitions. The practiceof magic was stillto some extent continued among them. Convincedof theirerrorby the eventswhich had recentlyoccurred, they came andmade a fullconfessiontoPaul,and publicly acknowledgedtheirsecretartsto be deceptive and Satanic. Many sorcerersalsoabjuredthe practiceof magic, and receivedChristas their Saviour. They broughttogetherthecostlybooks containingthe mysterious"Ephesian letters," and the secretsof their art, and burned them in thepresenceof allthe people. When the books had been consumed,theyproceededtoreckonup the value of the sacrifice. It was estimated at fiftythousand piecesof silver,equal to about ten thousand dollars . The influenceof these events was more widespread than even Paul then realized. The manifestationof thepower of Christwas a grand victoryforChristianityintheverystrongholdof superstition.
