PAUL AT EPHESUS . 135 inscribedmystic charactersand symbols,whichwere believedto possessgreat power. When pronounced,they were saidto accomplishwonders. When written,they were treasuredas a potentcharm to guard theirpossessorfrom robbers, from disease, and even from death. Numerous and costlybooks were writtenby the Ephesiansto explainthe meaning and use of thesesymbols. As Paul was brought in directcontactwith theidolatrousinhabitantsof Ephesus,thepower of God was strikinglydisplayedthrough him. The apostleswere not always able to work miraclesat will. The Lord grantedhisservants thisspecialpower astheprogressof hiscauseor the honor of his name required. Like Moses and Aaron at the court of Pharaoh ,the apostlehad now to maintain the truth againstthe lying wonders of the magicians; hence the miracles he wrought were of a differentcharacterfrom thosewhich he had heretoforeperformed. As the hem of Christ'sgarment had communicated healingpower to her who soughtreliefby the touch of faith, so on thisoccasion, garments were made the means of cureto allthat believed; " diseasesdepartedfrom them, and evilspirits went outof them." Yet thesemiraclesgave noencouragement to blind superstition. When Jesusfeltthe touchof the sufferingwoman , he exclaimed," Virtueisgone out of me ." So the scripturedeclaresthat the Lord wrought miraclesby thehand of Paul,and thatthename of theLord Jesuswas magnified,and not thename of Paul .
