134- LIFE OF PAUL . The Spiritof God had wrought with and through Paul in his laborsforhiscountrymen. Sufficientevidencehad beenpresentedtoconvince allwho honestlydesiredtoknow thetruth. But many permittedthemselvesto be controlledby prejudiceand unbelief, and refusedto yieldto the most conclusiveevidence. Fearing that the faithof the believerswould be endangeredby continued associationwith theseopposers of the truth, Paul separated the disciplesas a distinct body, and himselfcontinuedhispublicinstructionsin theschoolof one Tyrannus, a teacherof some note . Paul saw that " a greatdoor and effectual" was open before him, though there were "manyadversaries." Ephesus was not only the most magnificent,but themost corrupt, of the cities of Asia. Superstitionand sensualpleasureheld sway over her teemingpopulation. Under the shadow of her idoltemples, criminalsof every grade found shelter, and the most degrading vices flourished . The citywas famed for the worship of the goddessDiana and thepracticeof magic. Here was thegreattempleof Diana, which was regarded by theancientsasone of the wondersof theworld. Itsvastextentand surpassingmagnificencemade itthepride, not onlyof thecity, but of the nation. Kings and princeshad enricheditby theirdonations. The Ephesiansvied with oneanotherinaddingto itssplendor, and itwas made thetreasure-housefora largeshare of the wealth of Western Asia .
