PAUL AT EPHESUS . 133 selfa sinner,and conscienceconcurred with the sentence of the law . There aremany atthe presentday who have unwittinglyviolatedone of thepreceptsofGod's law. When the understandingisenlightened, and the claims of the fourth commandment are urged upon the conscience, they seethemselvessinnersinthesightof God . " Sin isthe transgressionof thelaw," and "he that shalloffend inonepointisguiltyof all." The honestseekeraftertruthwillnot plead ignoranceof the law as an excusefor transgression. Lightwas withinhisreach. God'sword isplain, and Christhas biddenhim searchthe Scriptures. He reveresGod's law asholy,just, and good, and he repentsof his transgression. By faithhe pleadsthe atoningbloodof Christ, and graspsthe promiseof pardon. His formerbaptism doesnot satisfyhim now . He has seen himselfa sinner,condemned by thelaw of God . He has experiencedanew a death tosin,and he desiresagain tobe buriedwith Christby baptism, that he may riseto walk in newness of life. Such a courseisin harmony with the example of Paul in baptizingthe Jewish converts. That incidentwas recordedby theHoly Spiritas an instructive lesson for the church . As was hiscustom,Paul had begun his work atEphesusby teachingin the synagogueof the Jews . He continued to labor there for three months, " disputingand persuadingthe things concerningthe kingdom of God." He at first met with a favorablereception; but as in other fieldsof labor, he was soonviolentlyopposedby theunbelievingJews. As theypersistedintheir rejectionof thegospel,theapostleceasedpreachinginthesynagogue.
