The Jews,now widelydispersedinallcivilized lands,weregenerallyexpectingthespeedyadvent of the Messiah . In their visitsto Jerusalem at the annual feasts, many had gone out to thebanks of the Jordan to listento the preaching of John the Baptist. From him they had heard the proclamationof ChristasthePromisedOne,and on theirreturnhome they had carriedthe tidings to allpartsof theworld. Thus had Providence preparedtheway fortheapostle'slabors. On hisarrivalat Ephesus,Paul found twelve brethren, who , likeApollos, had been disciples of John the Baptist, and likehim had gained an imperfectknowledge of the lifeand missionof Christ. They had not the abilityof Apollos, but with the same sincerityand faith theywere seekingtospreadthelightwhich they had received .
