Another claimed Peter as theirleader, affirmingthat he had been most intimate with Christ when he was upon earth,while Paul had been a persecutorof thebelievers. There was dangerthatthisparty spiritwould ruintheChristianchurch. Paul and Apolloswere in perfectharmony. The latterwas disappointedand grievedbecause of the dissensionin the church ; he took no advantageofthepreferenceshown himself,nor did he encourageit,but hastilyleftthefieldofstrife. When Paul afterwardurgedhim tovisitCorinth, he declined,and did not againlaborthereuntil longafter,when thechurchhad reacheda better spiritualstate. CHAPTER XIII . PAUL AT EPHESUS . WHILE Apolloswas preachingatCorinth,Paul fulfilledhispromiseto returnto Ephesus. He had made a brief visitto Jerusalem, and had spentsome timeatAntioch,thesceneofhisearly labors. Thence he had traveled through Asia Minor , visitingthe churches which he had himselfestablished, and strengtheningthe faithof the disciples. The cityofEphesuswas thecapitaloftheprovinceof Asia,* and the greatcommercial centerof Asia Minor. Itsharborwas crowded with ship *As used in the New Testament,the word Asia does not apply to the continent of Asia ,but to a Roman province which embraced the western part of AsiaMinor,and of which Ephesus was the capital.
